UNION CITY, CA — The Union City Police Department did not make any DUI arrests at a checkpoint held Saturday night. However, five drivers received citations for driving without a license including those whose licenses had been suspended or revoked.
A total of 341 drivers and vehicles were contacted between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. The DUI checkpoint was held on Union City Boulevard. The location was was selected because of previous reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.
The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads, which is why it received so much advance publicity.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
