An Open Letter to the New Haven Unified School District Board of Education

This district used to be like a super healthy body. Over time, it’s had a few setbacks but made adjustments to continue to be healthy and provide a great education. With the latest proposed cuts — especially to choir and band — the body as a whole will suffer. The heart will be irreparably damaged.  

I understand and empathize with you for the position the state has put you in.  However, I also am an optimist and am convinced that there’s a solution lurking that will allow these vital programs to continue. I would even advocate for more furlough days because I would rather have fewer days of quality, well-rounded education than more days of education without a heart.

I am willing to invest in you — and our future — by voting yes on Measure H.  As one of your investors, I would like you to do something in return: take the steps necessary to keep the heart and soul of the district healthy. 

You have one of the strongest lobbies available to a school district: a group of dedicated students, parents, faculty and staff. A great example of their commitment was demonstrated when they on the first day of spring break. Your job is to harness that passion and energy to overcome the hurdles put in front of providing our kids with the best education available. Our children and community expect no less.
