Attic Fire in Condo Complex Temporarily Displaces Residents

An attic fire at a condo complex in Union City Friday afternoon displaced several residents for at least the weekend, an Alameda County fire battalion chief said.

The fire at 2506 Copa Del Oro Dr. was reported at around 2 p.m., battalion chief Tony Connell said.

Firefighters had the one-alarm fire knocked down in about 10 minutes, but flames damaged two units in the eight-unit condo complex, while the others sustained minor to moderate water damage.

The fire started when a plumber was soldering a copper fitting in an upstairs bathroom, accidentally starting a fire. The fire spread to the attic.

The plumber suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released, Connell said. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to prevent the fire in the shared attic space to spread to the other units.

Power and water service was shut off to the entire building, temporarily displacing all residents for at least the weekend.

Residents are working with the building's property manager to determine when it will be safe to move back in, Connell said.
