Catherine Schoon Named 2013 New Haven Teacher of the Year

Robin Hernandez, an Educational Services Center coordinator, was named Classified Employee of the Year Tuesday night. Teachers and employees of the year from each district campus were also named.

The New Haven Unified School District has named its teachers and classified employees of the year for the 2012-2013 school year.

Grabbing the highest honors at Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting were Catherine Schoon and Robin Hernandez, according to a district newsletter.

Schoon, a longtime kindergarten teacher at Pioneer Elementary School, was named the district’s Teacher of the Year.

Hernandez, an Educational Services Center employee who coordinates substitute teaching throughout the district, was named Classified Employee of the Year.

The school board also recognized each campus’ classified employee and teacher of the year.

Among the honorees was the late Christopher Ryan, a James Logan High School teacher who passed away in October. Ryan taught English and social science at the local high school since 1994 and also worked as a part-time administrator, according to campus officials.
