Help Fund Local Artist's New Music Project

There are only a few days left to contribute to the highly anticipated release by Lateef the Truthspeaker and Lyrics Born, "Latyrx: The Second Album."

After a number of critically lauded independent releases and a lengthy list of musical accolades — including a Grammy nod — Union City-based rapper is inviting fans to play an active role in the creation of his latest release.

Lateef and longtime fellow Bay Area collaborator Lyrics Born, together known as Latyrx, are busy in the studio finishing up The Second Album, a highly anticipated (and long overdue) follow up to their simple-titled 1997 debut, The Album.

The duo launched an IndieGoGo campaign two months ago to allow fans to contribute funds directly to the creation of the album.

There are only a few days left to contribute, with the campaign ending Saturday, July 21. Whatever is raised via the campaign will be used to produce the album.

“Latyrx is taking this opportunity to go ahead and build with our fans to try and make this happen into a reality and let y’all be a part of the creation of this second album,” Lateef said in a video message for the campaign.

“We’ve choses to do it with the people who have stuck with us for the past 20 years,” Lyrics Born added.

“At no other time in history has the listener and the musician been able to be involved, hand in hand, in the co-creation of art. As huge proponents of independent expression, art, and technology, we have chosen to produce this album with our fans, for our fans,” Lyrics Born said in a statement.

Lateef and Lyrics Born, along with the members of their Quannum Projects record label and crew, created a blueprint for independent success in the genre, while pioneering a forward-thinking, progressive movement in rap. Together, Lateef and Lyrics Born have made countless underground hip-hop classics, including 90s hits “Lady Don’t Tek No” and “Say That,” along with solo hit singles such as Lyrics Born’s “Callin’ Out” and Lateef and Fatboy Slim’s “Wonderful Night.”

Though Lateef and Lyrics Born have always worked together, they haven’t made another full-length production since The Album (excluding their Latyrical Madness Volume One mixape, which dropped late last year),

Their triumphant return as a duo has no release date set but promises the same raw, energetic, conscious and creative sound that first put them on the map.

The Second Album will feature a variety of musical talents, including DJ Shadow, Kool A.D. of Das Racist, Zion I, Boots Riley, Pretty Lights and more.
