Know The Rules in Union City Before You Light Fireworks on the Fourth

The police and fire departments are taking a 'zero tolerance' approach to illegal firework displays.

From the Union City Police Department:

The City of Union City wants you to be informed about fire safety laws and requirements during the upcoming Fourth of July celebration. Only “Safe and Sane” or “State Approved” fireworks purchased from non-profit fireworks stands are allowed in Union City. Also, no fireworks of any kind, including “Safe and Sane,” are allowed east of Mission Boulevard.

The Fire Department responds to fireworks-related injuries and/or fires each year. Many Americans, including children, are injured and/or disfigured due to the destructive power of fireworks. In addition, fireworks cause preventable structure fires where valuable possessions and memories are lost.

On July 4th all parks in Union City will close at 7:30 pm. Also, City ordinance requires written approval from a property owner(s) if you intend to use “Safe and Sane” fireworks on a property other than your own.

The Police and Fire Departments will enforce these provisions of the law with a “zero tolerance” approach. Law enforcement and fire personnel will respond to all complaints involving the use of fireworks. The use of illegal fireworks and/or the misuse of “Safe and Sane” fireworks may subject those responsible to citation or arrest. In addition, the Police and Fire Departments will be issuing citations to property owners and tenants who allow the use of illegal fireworks on their property or property under their control. The property owner and tenant will be held liable and cited for associated violations up to three hundred dollars ($300) for each occurrence.

It is our goal to report to the State of California that the City of Union City suffered no injuries to citizens or building losses due to the use of fireworks in 2013. To help us accomplish our goal, we ask for your understanding, assistance, and cooperation in celebrating the Fourth of July safely.

We wish you a very happy and safe Fourth of July!
