Logan Athletic Hall of Fame 2012 Honorees Announced

Vince Amey, Monique Ambers and Archie Gilbert, former James Logan High School student-athletes who went on to play professional football, basketball and baseball, respectively, are among eight individuals who will be inducted next month into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame, Athletic Director Tom Rosenthal announced. 

Tennis player Liz Marpuri and  track and field stars Nastasha Neal, Nkosinza Balumbu and Kevin Craddock also will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet, Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Fremont Marriott.

Also being inducted is Jorge Maldonado, who spent 21 years as head athletic trainer at Logan and continues to work in the District, teaching at Hillview Crest Elementary School.

Tickets for the banquet, which will start at 6 p.m., are priced at $55 for individuals and $500 for a table of 10. Tickets can be order by contacting Sara Muse (471-3850, ext. 60118 orsmuse@nhusd.k12.ca.us).

More information on the former student-athletes being inducted:

• Monique Ambers helped the girls basketball team to the North Coast Section championship in 1987. She played collegiately at Arizona State and professionally in Italy and in the Women’s National Basketball Association, where she now serves as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty.
• Vince Amey was an all-state football player in 1993. He played collegiately at Arizona State and in the National Football League, with the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams. He now serves as assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Arizona.
• Liz Marpuri, who graduated in 1994, was a two-time North Coast Section tennis champion, winning 43 consecutive matches. She played collegiately at both Fresno State and San Jose State, winning all West Coast Conference honors.
• Natasha Neal, who graduated in 1998, was a three-time state champion in the hurdles. An All-America at the University of Southern California, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
• Archie Gilbert led Logan to a North Coast Section baseball championship in 2001. After starring at Cal State, East Bay, he signed professionally with the Boston Red Sox and played in the minor leagues with the Red Sox, Oakland A’s and Washington Nationals organizations.
• Nkosinza Balumbu, a 2005 graduate, was a two-time state champion in the triple jump. He won All-America honors at the University of Arkansas, and he made the final round of the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier this year, finishing sixth.
• Kevin Craddock, another 2005 graduate, was a three-time state champion in the hurdles. Holder of 24 national high school records, he won All-America honors at UCLA and also reached the finals of the U.S. Olympic trials this year.
