Man in Critical Condition After Speeding Crash Near I-880
Traffic was snarled until 9 a.m. after the early morning crash. Alcohol may have been involved, police said.

A Union City man is in critical condition after an early morning accident near Alvarado-Niles Road and I-880, police said.
There are early indications that alcohol was involved, according to Lt. Ben Horner of the Union City Police Department.
The accident occurred around 3:11 a.m. Thursday when the the driver was heading westbound on Alvarado-Niles Road. He was driving at an “extremely high rate” of speed, Horner said.

The driver lost control of his vehicle just before the I-880 overpass near Crowne Plaza. The car hit the center divider, which launched the car into the air. The driver was ejected from the car and the car rolled over numerous times, Horner said.
Both the driver and the car were found in the weeds alongside the I-880 on-ramp, Horner said.

The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and is currently at a nearby trauma center, Horner said. The car was “squashed,” Horner said.
Some of the debris from the crash hit another vehicle that was going eastbound on Alvarado-Niles Road. It caused minor damage to the vehicle, according to a police report.
The early morning accident caused traffic to back up along Alvarado-Niles Road in both directions between Almaden Boulevard and Union Landing. Scattered debris on the roadway and the vehicle being in a difficult location to pull out without stopping traffic contributed to the back-up, Horner said.
Traffic opened up on Alvarado-Niles Road in the westbound direction several hours ago with traffic just beginning to clear up in the eastbound direction about 9 a.m., Horner said.
