Update: Union City Man Arrested After Standoff at Hayward Motel

A Union City man wanted on suspicion of vehicle theft and violating his parole was arrested last Tuesday afternoon after a brief standoff with Hayward police, according to media reports and online court records.

According to the Hayward Daily Review, 34-year-old Joseph Baca ran to and took shelter at the Days Inn and Suites on the 24400 block of Mission Boulevard in Hayward around 3 p.m. after authorities tried to arrest him near the motel.

Baca, who was unarmed, refused to come out for 45 minutes as authorities, including state Department of Justice agents, evacuated the motel and surrounded the building, the Daily Review reports.

Baca, who was identified by the newspaper as a gang member, surrendered to Hayward police at about 3:50 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident. An unidentified woman who was with Baca was also taken into custody on suspicion of possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, according to the newspaper.

The Daily Review initially stated that Baca was wanted on suspicion of committing sexual acts with a child under 10 but has since updated its report.

Online court records show that Baca does not currently face any charges related to sex crimes, though he was previously arrested on April 8, 2011 on similar allegations.

According to Alameda County’s Inmate Locator service, Baca currently faces one count of vehicle theft and one count of felony parole violation and is being held at Santa Rita Jail on a $250,000 bail.
