Mayor Green, Former Councilman Valle Among Finalists for Nadia Lockyer's County Seat

Union City Mayor Mark Green and Former Councilman Richard Valle are among five finalists being considered to fill the District 2 seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, according to an Alameda County press release.

The five candidates will be interviewed by the Board of Supervisors at a special public session at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. They were selected from .

The other finalists include Ana Apodaca, Newark’s vice mayor who, according to the Oakland Tribune, received the most votes during yesterday’s Board of Supervisors meeting; former District 2 Supervisor Gail Steele; and Sheryl Grant, who has no political history.

Steele announced that she would not seek election for the seat in November.

Green, whose term as mayor expires this year, is currently running for the 20th State Assembly District seat and Valle has a bid in for the 2012 Union City mayoral race.

In his application for the county seat, Green said that if he advances in the State Assembly race following the June primary, then he will not seek election for the Board of Supervisors in November.

"If I am appointed to the Board of Supervisors and advance through the primary for the state assembly, I will run for the state assembly seat and not run for the Board of Supervisors position," Green wrote. "If I am appointed to the Board of Supervisors and do not advance past the primary for the state assembly, I will run for the Board of Supervisors position in November 2012."

In a previous interview with Patch, Valle, the CEO of Tri-CED Community Recycling, said he would leave the mayoral race if selected as a District 2 supervisor.

"There's greater potential for more resources, greater potential for the greater good of the city as opposed to what a mayor can or can’t do," Valle said last month.

The District 2 seat became vacant last month when former District 2 Supervisor Nadia Lockyer after a highly covered bout of drug addiction, an extramarital affair and an alleged, unfounded assault in which she claimed her ex-lover attacked her.

The board plans to appoint someone by June 5. The appointed supervisor will serve in the District 2 seat until the November general election, when voters will have the opportunity to elect a candidate to serve the remainder of the term through 2014.

District 2 encompasses Union City, Hayward and Newark, along with parts of Fremont and Sunol.
