Memorial Service for Man Killed by Hayward Police Set for Friday

A memorial service for a man shot and killed by Hayward police earlier this month will be held Friday in San Leandro, according to the Bay Area News Group.

The service for 19-year-old Shawn Joseph Jetmore Stoddard-Nunez will be held at 7 p.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church, located at 14235 Bancroft Ave. in San Leandro.

Shawn Joseph Jetmore Stoddard-Nunez was killed March 3 while he was a passenger in a vehicle that authorities say rammed a police car in Hayward.

The officer was trying to pull over a Honda that was being driven erratically on Foothill Boulevard at around 3:20 a.m. When the officer got out of his vehicle, the driver — identified as 23-year-old Arthur Pakman of Oakley — tried to drive away and struck the police car.

The officer shot at the car, hitting Stoddard-Nunez twice, BANG reports.

Stoddard-Nunez was not the intended target.

Pakman, who may have been drunk at the time, continued to flee but surrendered after he crashed at D Street and Foothill Boulevard.

Hayward police told BANG that if Stoddard-Nunez had survived, he likely would not have been charged with any crime in connection to the incident.

Family and friends told BANG that Stoddard-Nunez was a sweet person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Stoddard-Nunez had asked Pakman, a longtime friend, for a ride to another friend’s house earlier that night.

At the time of his death, Stoddard-Nunez was living with his brother in Hayward and attending Laney College with the goal of becoming a chef, according to BANG.

According to BANG, Hayward police are seeking homicide charges against Pakman in connection to Stoddard-Nunez’s death. He has yet to be formally charged.

Stoddard-Nunez’s death came just hours after an officer-involved shooting in Union City.

On March 2 at around 10 p.m. a suspect — identified as 26-year-old Amos Smith of Union City — was shot and killed in Union City when he drove away from police in a vehicle, then fled on foot before allegedly brandishing a weapon and pointing it at officers.

It was one of five officer-involved shootings in the Bay Area that weekend.
