New Chase Branch to Open at Old Blockbuster Location

The new location is scheduled to open in December

A new Chase bank will soon be open at the former Blockbuster site in the Union Square Marketplace Shopping Center on the corner of Alvarado-Niles and Decoto roads, according to a city staff newsletter.

Located at 34596 Alvarado-Niles Rd., the new branch is tentatively scheduled to open Dec. 13, according to the bank’s website. It will be the second Chase branch in Union City.

According to a manager at the Union Landing Chase branch, all staff has already been hired for the new location.

Construction and renovation of the 6,024 square-foot space is scheduled to begin shortly, the city newsletter said. 

The new location became available when shut down earlier this year.

Ubiquitous in the 90s, the video store chain saw significant revenue loss in the digital age. Competition from internet rental services such as Netflix and rental kiosks such as Redbox have contributed to the company’s losses.

Blockbluster filed for bankruptcy in Sept. 2010 and was later bought out by satellite television provider Dish Network on April 6, 2011. According to the city’s newsletter, the company was completely acquired on April 26, resulting in the closure of several stores, including the Union City branch.
