New Haven Responds to Connecticut Shooting

In the wake of Friday, the New Haven Unified School District is sharing resources to help local families cope with the tragedy.

On Monday, the district released an informational brochure titled "After the Trauma: Helping My Child Cope" which includes tips on how parents can talk to their children. The material can be downloaded from the district website in both Spanish and English here.

In an email last week, school officials ensured that all New Haven campuses, which includes seven elementary schools in Union City and south Hayward, have safety plans and protocols for disasters and dangerous situations in place. The safety procedures are practiced multiple times a year, said district spokesman Rick La Plante.

However, La Plante added that no school is safe as gun control laws remain lenient.

"It's disingenuous, in a society that for so many years has sacrificed so many children to the gun lobby, to expect a school or any other entity to protect everyone from everything all the time," La Plante said. "This isn't necessarily an argument for gun control, but our politicians have ceded the debate, even cowered from it. It's an issue that, in a very literal sense, is crying for discussion."
