Update: Newlyweds’ Dress and Tuxedo Stolen in Car Burglary

The joyful union of a young newlywed couple turned into a nightmare after their belongings were stolen from their rental car early Sunday morning.

After spending the weekend celebrating their wedding, Faeez Khan, 23, of Hayward, and his new wife, also 23, returned to the , located at 32083 Alvarado-Niles Rd., at about 3 a.m. Sunday. They parked their silver four-door rental car in the garage and went to their room.

When Khan went to the car the next morning, he was crippled by the sight before him. One of the windows was broken and most of his and his wife’s possessions were gone.

“My heart just dropped,” he said. “Who would do a thing like this to newlyweds?”

Among the stolen items were Khan and his wife’s traditional wedding outfits, his wife’s jewelry, their suitcases and a digital camera, along with several wedding gifts, according to Khan.

He estimates the total cost of their belongings at about $2,000, but the sentimental value was much more.

According to Khan, the couple’s camera included photos not just from their wedding on Saturday but also from the three days of traditional Indian ceremonies that lead up to the wedding.

Though upset over the loss, Khan hopes karma catches up to the thief.

“If they really needed it and they needed something to steal to get by, I hope it was worth it,” Khan said. “But what goes around comes around. I hope he gets caught. It’s not fair.”

Police say the unknown suspect may have been drawn to the car because it was marked with “just married.”

“My theory is that the thief was attracted to the vehicle because of the ‘just married’ lettering written on the sides of the car,” said Cmdr. Ben Horner. “I feel that this is an unfortunate crime of opportunity and hope that the bride and groom will be able to enjoy the beginning of their marriage together.”

There were no known witnesses but police are checking surveillance footage from surrounding businesses and checking their files for any habitual burglary suspects in the area.

Police are also seeking the public’s help.
