Police Log: Hate Crime, Robberies, Shooting

A robber bites a Loss Prevention Officer, and more incidents from August 1 to August 7.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between August 1 and 7 as released by the Union City Police Department

 

Thursday, Aug. 1

  • A police officer was in the Safeway parking when he noticed a robbery suspect fighting with a store Loss Prevention Officer. After biting the employee’s arm, the suspect was able to get away from the Loss Prevention Officer. The police officer ran to help the employee, and the suspect tried to run away. The suspect led the officer on a short foot chase, but the police officer was able to catch the thief. The suspect was arrested for robbery and taken to a local jail.

 

  • Officers responded to a possible hate crime on 5th Street. While the victim was sleeping at home, someone spray painted the letters “KKK” on the victim’s garage.

Friday, Aug. 2

  • A victim heard his dog barking and looked outside his residence on Derby court. The victim saw two suspects stealing property from his vehicle. The suspects fled in a dark grey older model sedan, possible a Honda Civic. The suspects were described as two males wearing dark clothing.

 

Saturday, Aug. 3

  • Officers investigated an armed robbery on Polaris Avenue. The victim reported parking near her residence when a white male wearing dark clothing approached her. The male pointed a semiautomatic firearm at the victim and threatened to shoot her if she tried to start her vehicle. The suspect was reported to have discharged the firearm up in the air during the crime. The male took the victim’s purse and cell phone, and was seen getting into the passenger side of an older, grey or silver, box-style Jeep.

 

  • Officers responded to investigate a shooting on Miramonte Way. Responding officers located a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive. The Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians responded to investigate and process the scene. The Investigation Division is currently conducting a follow-up on the case. A preliminary investigation determined that the victim and suspect were acquaintances.
