Police Log: Home Invasion, Shooting and Robberies

A home invasion, a shooting in Decoto and an armed robbery near In-N-Out appear in this week's crime log.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated May 6, the log contains incidents that occurred from April 28-May 6. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, April 28

A man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, battery on a juvenile and child endangerment after attacking his wife and 17-year-old son with a baseball bat, according to a police report. Officers responding to the complaint at a residence on Solar Circle witnessed the suspect punching his son. The suspect then grabbed and punched his wife and punched her when she tried to intervene, the report said. Officers separated the individuals and arrested the suspect. After interviewing the family members, police learned that the suspect attacked his wife and son with a baseball bat, the report said. The son was able to disarm his father prior to the officers’ arrival, according to the report. The mother and son received medical treatment for minor injuries.

Friday, April 29

Two suspects kicked in the door and punched a resident after attempting to burglarize a home. According to the report, the suspects rang the doorbell of a residence on Arizona Street for several minutes. The homeowner looked through the peephole of the front door and didn’t recognize the suspects. One of the suspects then kicked in the door and punched the victim who was standing just inside the home. The suspects ran to a nearby residence and fled in a vehicle, according to police. No property was taken and the homeowner was not injured.

Later, a Community Policing and Problem Solving Unit (COPPS) patrolling the Decoto neighborhood recognized a suspect on 7th near G Street who was wanted for failing to register with his parole officer.  The officer detained the suspect at gunpoint due to his prior arrests for violent crimes.  After searching the suspect, officers recovered 8.2 grams of heroin hidden in his pants pocket, the report said.  The suspect was arrested and transported to Santa Rita Jail.

Also on Friday, two suspects attempted to rob people with a handgun near the In-N-Out at Union Landing. According to the report, the suspects tried to rob five victims before fleeing in a vehicle. Neighboring police departments were notified and the suspect’s car was stopped by Hayward police officers. Four people were in the car, two of whom were identified as the robbers and arrested.

Saturday, April 30

During the evening, a citizen reported suspicious persons who were looking into windows and possibly attempting to burglarize homes in the area of Clover and Mann Avenue. Officers arrived and discovered a home broken into on Clover Street and searched the area.  The located two likely suspects near one of the homes that was broken into.  The suspects were detained, searched, identified and found to be in possession of items stolen from the house on Clover Street. Another suspect was found hiding underneath a car several driveways down from the victim’s house.  Stolen items were found near his location, as well.  All three suspects were on suspicion of residential burglary and arrested.

Sunday, May 1

Officers responded to 00 Liquors to investigate a domestic disturbance report. When officers arrived, they learned an argument occurred between a boyfriend and girlfriend. However, through the investigation, officers noticed the girlfriend was behaving strangely and possibly under the influence of drugs. Officers searched her property and located methamphetamine, heroin and a meth pipe. Officers determined that she was under the influence of drugs and arrested.

In the evening, a man was arrested on suspicion of child abuse after allegedly beating his 18-year-old daughter with a broomstick. According to police report, the father was intoxicated and was attempting to drive to a liquor store to buy more alcohol. The daughter attempted to dissuade him from driving by grabbing the car keys, the report said. The father became enraged and hit the daughter with the broomstick, causing abrasions and welts. The daughter was treated for minor injuries while the father was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and taken to jail.

Also on Tuesday, officers conducted an extensive search for a missing “at-risk” 91-year-old woman who suffered from dementia.  The elderly woman had wandered away from her home on Monterey Drive in the middle of the night. Officers used a tracking dog, a helicopter, and a number of other resources until the missing woman was found hiding under a bush about a mile from her house.  “She was cold and hungry but otherwise in good condition,” according to the report.

Officers also responded to a possible burglary on 9th Street. As officers arrived, the suspect jumped several fences and managed to escape the police perimeter. The suspect was later tracked down and located hiding in a residence in San Lorenzo.  His house was surrounded and he eventually surrendered.

 Thursday, May 5

A shooting occurred in the early hours in the Decoto neighborhood. No one was hurt. A patrol sergeant heard the gunshots while near Our Lady of the Rosary church. Officers responding to the area found a gang member standing in front of his home on Whipple Road.  He told officers that he was walking back to his home after visiting a friend when a stranger started shooting at him. Police said the story was “thin,” but officers did not locate any suspects in the immediate area.  Several bullet holes were located in a vehicle parked in front of the victim’s home.  One gunshot penetrated the residence and ended up in a closet inside a child’s room. 

Friday, May 6

A home invasion robbery occurred on Panama Circle in the early morning. The victim told officers that she was in her bedroom when she heard what sounded like someone ransacking the bedroom next to hers. She said she came out to see who it was when she was assaulted by three male suspects with red bandanas covering their faces. The suspects pistol-whipped her on the head repeatedly while asking where an individual was and money was, according to the report. The victim sustained a large bump on her head and a possible injury to her skull and was taken to a local hospital. The suspects fled before police arrived. A second victim, the homeowner, however, gave a conflicting description of the number of suspects as well as the clothing. Police are investigating the case.
