Police Log: Juvenile Critically Injured in Motorcycle Accident; Man Arrested with Loaded Gun

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between Feb. 14 and Feb. 19 as released by the Union City Police Department. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style. 

THURSDAY, FEB. 14

Attempted burglary on Birmingham Way

A Birmingham Way resident scared off two suspects who were attempting to break into his home. The resident reported the burglary attempt at 10:55 a.m. He was upstairs on a business call and wasn’t able to answer the door when he heard loud knocking. After the call, he went downstairs and saw someone reaching inside the front door trying to unlock the security chain that kept the door from opening. The two suspects fled when the resident yelled at them. Officers determined that the suspects had tried to kick the door in after no one answered the door. Officers searched for the suspects but could not locate them.

Juvenile seriously injured in motorcycle accident

Officers responded to a report of a major injury accident at about 2:22 p.m. in the area of G and Third streets. A juvenile was riding a motorcycle without a helmet and failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the report. There was no stop sign for westbound traffic and the motorcyclist collided with the oncoming traffic. The juvenile was taken to a local trauma center with serious injuries.

SATURDAY, FEB. 16

Man found with loaded gun in suspicious vehicle

A man was arrested on weapons charges after being found with a loaded gun in a parked car on Marsten Avenue. Residents reported a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of a vacant home at about 11 p.m. Officers responded and contacted several males who were sitting in the vehicle. One of them was found with a loaded Smith and Wesson revolver in his waistband. He was arrested without incident and the gun was booked into evidence.

TUESDAY, FEB. 19

Gun stolen in home burglary

Officers responded to a home on Brier Street at about 5:30 p.m. A resident came home and heard the sound of glass breaking and called police. Officers responded to the home but did not find any suspects inside the home. The suspects appeared to have entered through a glass door on the lower floor of the home. Officers found some of the victim’s property discarded along a neighboring fence. A loaded semiautomatic handgun was taken from the home.
