Police Log: Man Flashes Girl, Chain Snatching at Union Landing, Armed Robberies

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated Sept. 1, the log contains incidents that occurred from Aug. 25 to 30. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, Aug. 25

Police assist with Fremont armed robbery spree investigation

Members of the Union City SWAT team, as well as officers from the Major Crimes Task Force, CHP and Fremont and Newark Police Departments, served search and arrest warrants at five Newark homes. The search and arrest warrants were a result of an ongoing multiple location robbery case in locations throughout the Tri-City and adjoining area. (Ed.’s note: Four men were arrested during the search. A fifth suspect was later arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 31 in Hayward by U.S. Marshals. Read the full Union City Patch report .)

Attempted armed robbery at Decoto shopping center clothing store

On Thursday night, officers responded to the clothing store on Alvarado-Niles Road (in the Safeway shopping center) to investigate a just-occurred attempted armed robbery. The clerk told an investigator that he was alone in the store when two suspects entered and appeared to be looking at merchandise. The clerk felt the suspects were acting suspiciously and kept an eye on them. One of the suspects came up from behind the clerk and pointed a handgun at the back of his head, the report said. The victim immediately ran out of the store before the suspect could say a word. The suspects also ran out of the store and fled in another direction. It appears the suspects fled without any loot due to the victim’s immediate flight.

Friday, Aug. 26

Man exposes himself to minor

Officers responded to the area of Union City and Regents boulevards to investigate an indecent exposure case. The victim, a juvenile girl, reported that an adult male exposed his penis to her while waving his arms in a motion for her to come closer. The victim ran home to report the incident and the suspect fled in the opposite direction.

Armed robbery at Mission Boulevard Shell station

Officers responded to the Shell gas station located on the corner of Whipple Road and Mission Boulevard to investigate a just-occurred armed robbery on Friday night. A suspect entered the station’s convenience store and pointed a handgun at the clerk, demanding the money from the cash register, according to the report. The suspect made off with an undetermined amount of cash and fled toward Second Street.

Drunk driver flips vehicle in accident

On Friday night, officers responded to the area of Mission Boulevard and Dagget Avenue to investigate a report of an overturned vehicle accident. Arriving officers found a vehicle overturned on its side, blocking the first southbound traffic lane. The driver and her passengers had exited the vehicle and stood by on the sidewalk. No one appeared to be injured as a result of the accident, but the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and transported to a local hospital for observation, according to the report.

Saturday, Aug. 27

Husband and wife arrested during drunken night

During the night, a patrol officer on routine saw a vehicle fail to stop for a red light at the intersection of San Andreas Drive and Santa Susanna Way. The officer stopped the car and smelled alcohol emitting from the vehicle, driver and passenger, according to the report. The driver refused to perform a field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The driver’s wife, the passenger, was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, the report said.

Sunday, Aug. 28

Meth-head arrest at Union Landing

An officer saw a suspicious person in the area of Petco inside the Union Landing Shopping Center. The officer made contact with the person and found him to be under the influence of methamphetamine and in possession of drug paraphernalia, the report said. The subject was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and transported to jail.

Man robbed at Kennedy Park

A man reported that he was walking home through in the evening when he was confronted by two men. The suspects simulated a hard movement to their waistbands as if they were armed with handguns and ordered the victim to lie face down on the grass while they stole his belongings, the report said. The suspects then ran into James Logan High School. The suspects were described as black adult males, around 5’10”, wearing dark hooded sweatshirts.

Monday, Aug. 29

Necklace snatched at Union Landing

During the evening, officers responded to in Union Landing to investigate a strong-arm robbery. The victim had just finished dining at the restaurant and exited when an unknown suspect attacked him from behind and broke off a golden chain necklace from around his neck. The suspect ran to a nearby vehicle and fled, the report said. Police are actively investigating the case.

Maintenance worker robbed and stabbed in parking lot robbery

On Monday night, officers were sent to 4013 Whipple Rd. to investigate a robbery in which the victim was stabbed. Arriving officers found the victim bleeding from stab wounds to his back, the report said. Alameda County Fire and AMR Ambulance responded to treat the victim and take him to a local hospital for treatment. The investigator later learned that the victim was a worker assigned to pick up garbage in the parking lot. The victim was confronted by the suspect as he came around a truck. The suspect punched the victim in the face, causing his eyeglasses to fall off. The victim tried to get up and run away when he felt a stabbing sensation to his back. The victim fell to the ground and the suspect rummaged through his pockets and took his property. The victim rolled under a truck, then fled into the business and called for help. The suspect fled in an unknown direction. He was described as a black male, thin build, about 6’3”, wearing a long-sleeved white t-shirt, soiled blue jeans. (Read the Union City Patch report .)

Tuesday, Aug. 30

Police investigate possible suicide attempt at cemetery

In the afternoon, police learned that a possibly suicidal man might be on the grounds of the Chapel of the Chimes cemetery near the Union City-Hayward border. Police were told that man was despondent and possibly armed with a gun. Officers eventually located him at a Union City home where he was safely detained for observation.
