Police Log: Marijuana Grow House Found on Crest Lane; Multiple Home Burglaries
Reports also include a man pulling a knife on his ex-girlfriend in the Safeway parking lot and a large fight in a park, among others.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note. The log contains incidents that occurred from June 7 to 13. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.
Thursday, June 7
Man resists arrests, girlfriend jumps in to help; both go to jail

A patrol officer made a traffic stop in the parking lot of TGIF located at Union Landing. The adult male driver would not properly identify himself and was consequently taken into custody. During the arrest process, the driver resisted the officer and had to be forcefully driven to the ground and handcuffed.
As the officer struggled with the suspect, the suspect’s girlfriend jumped into the fray in an attempt to assist her boyfriend. As a result, she was also given a lift to the local jail. The male suspect had a felony warrant for burglary and several new charges were added based upon his resistive behavior.

Hayward man arrested for stealing U-Haul truck
On Thursday evening, a Hayward resident decided it would be entertaining to steal a U-Haul truck in the City of Fremont. The adult male was arrested by UCPD patrol officers. The suspect stated he was in the process of trying to “extend his contract.” However, U-Haul had no record of the transaction and he was taken to jail on suspicion of auto theft.
Friday, June 8
Woman arrested for being drunk in public
On Friday, officers received a report of a woman screaming in the middle of the street on Veneto Ave. in the Seven Hills neighborhood. It was determined that the 45-year-old woman had been drinking all morning and was unable to care for her own safety. At around 1 p.m., the woman was arrested and transported to the local jail to sober up.
Fourth Street home ransacked in burglary
Later that afternoon, unknown suspects kicked open the front door of a home on the 500 block of Fourth Street in Decoto. The burglary occurred between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. The home was completely ransacked and personal items as well as $70 in cash that was on a nightstand were taken.
Saturday, June 9
Large groups brawl at Cesar Chavez Park
Around 6 p.m. Saturday, a large group of black males began fighting with a similar size group of Latino males at Cesar Chavez Park. When officers arrived, most of the those involved were uncooperative with police and officers kicked them all out of the park.
Sunday, June 10
Electronics stolen in three home burglaries
On Sunday, a number of residential burglaries were reported to UCPD.
Between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, a homeowner left his house locked and secure on La Brea Terrace. When he returned, he found the house broken into and ransacked. The point of entry was a kitchen window that appeared to have been broken with a garden tool. The loss was electronics equipment.
A homeowner on Comet Circle reported that his house had been locked and secured when he left the previous day. When he returned on Sunday, he found his garage door open and numerous electronic items and tools missing from his garage. Also missing was his large blue Union City garbage can, which may have been used by the thieves to hide the stolen goods as they wheeled them away from the house.
A homeowner on Norwalk St. returned home on Sunday after being gone for the weekend. An unknown suspect removed a rear window screen and forced open the sliding glass door. Two flat screen TV’s were stolen along with a Sony PlayStation game console. Forensic evidence was recovered from this break-in and the burglary detective has been assigned the case.
Monday, June 11
Newlywed couple’s wedding outfits, belongings stolen from hotel parking garage
On Monday, officers were dispatched to the Crown Plaza hotel on Alvarado Niles Road at around 3 a.m. to take an auto burglary report. A young couple had just been married and was spending the night at the hotel after the ceremony. The groom noticed that the rear window of the rental car had been smashed allowing a thief to enter and steal the bride’s dress, the groom’s tuxedo and a number of personal items including some wedding gifts. Detectives are checking local businesses for surveillance video and the media was notified in an attempt to generate witnesses.

Man found dead in apartment
On Monday morning, officers, Alameda County Fire and EMS personnel responded to an apartment located at 1501 Decoto Rd. to check on an unresponsive adult male. Officers located the male unconscious in his bathroom. The 49-year-old man had no signs of life and was pronounced dead by medics. After interviewing family members it was determined that the man had a long history of health issues. The coroner’s office assumed responsibility of the investigation until cause of death could be determined.
Man pulls knife on ex-girlfriend in Safeway parking lot
At about 8 p.m. Monday evening, officers responded to a domestic assault in the Safeway parking lot that included the threatened use of a knife. The suspect, a 66-year-old male transient, kicked his ex-girlfriend in the abdomen and brandished a knife threatening to kill her if she called the police. A passing witness observed the incident and alerted police. Authorities responded to the scene and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of several felonies and transported to jail. The victim received minor injuries.
Tuesday, June 12
Corporal Stan Rodrigues receives Officer of the Year award
Corporal Stan Rodrigues, a 16-year veteran of UCPD, received the agency’s “Officer of the Year” award at the City Council meeting. Corporal Rodrigues has been an exceptional member of the department for many years and has worked as a detective, gang task force member, a field training officer, a SWAT team member, canine handler, and a host of other assignments.
In his spare time, Stan teaches Intro to Law Enforcement at James Logan High School and serves as the president of the police officers association. Stan is married and has a family. Stan was chosen for this award by his peers based on his commitment to the City and to the department.
Wednesday, June 13
Residents say shots fired near Walmart
At about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, UCPD received several phone calls about shots heard in the area of Walmart. One homeowner reported that a bullet had struck their condominium on Flint Drive. Officers flooded the area but could not locate and injured parties or additional evidence of a shooting. Investigators are examining parking lot footage from Walmart’s surveillance system in an effort to corroborate the incident.
Marijuana grow house found on Crest Lane
On Wednesday morning, UCPD officers assisted the Oakland Housing Authority police in the service of a search warrant on the 32400 block of Crest Lane. A marijuana grow was located in the home and Housing Authority police are following up on suspect identifications.
TV and iPad stolen in Moccasin Street home burgary
A residential burglary occurred on the 32700 block of Moccasin but was not reported until the following day. The point of entry was the front kitchen window, which had been lifted out of its track. The burglary occurred between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. An iPad and a flat screen TV were reported stolen.
