This Week: Youth Track and Field Sign-Ups, Citizenship Classes, Marrow Donor Registration
What's happening around town this week

Here are five things going on this week that you need to know about:
- Join the Lions Club as they host their annual Student Speakers Contest on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. The topic for this year's contest is: What Could the America of Yesterday Teach the America of Tomorrow?" Students will compete in zone, district and regional levels before making it to the area finals.
- There's still time to sign up for St. Anne's upcoming youth track and field season. Boys and girls in kindergarten through the eighth grade can register this week at James Logan High School from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Download registration forms from www.saintannecatholic.org and bring them to practice. For more information, contact Muriel Irwin at irwin.muriel@sbcglobal.net.
- Prepare for the naturalization exam by taking citizenship classes at the Union City Library. Led by the New Haven Adult School, the class costs $55 and will be held this Tuesday and Thursday at the library. Register at the New Haven Adult School or call 510-489-2185.
- Peter Kolesnikov, a James Logan High School teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student, is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. at the Fremont Hall of Justice on Thursday, Feb. 23. Kolesnikov is currently out of custody. Arrested Jan. 12 while on his way to meet with the juvenile victim, Kolesnikov eventually posted bail on Jan. 26.
- Register with the Asian American Donor Program as a marrow/stem cell donor and help a local resident, Joey, a Pacific Islander who was diagnosed with leukemia. The ideal donor will most likely be a Pacific Islander as well, so Filipino Advocates for Justice are urging residents to come out to a special registration event at Paddy's Coffee House on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
