Union City Mourns Passing of Richard Valle

The Union City resident a county supervisor's death prompted an outpouring of pain and sympathy.

UNION CITY, CA — The City of Union City, where Alameda County Supervisor Richard Valle grew up and started his political career, has issued a statement following the death of Valle, which was announced on Wednesday.

The City of Union City mourns the passing of a pillar of our community, Mr. Richard Valle, former City of Union City Councilmember and Alameda County Board Supervisor for District 2.

Richard grew up in Union City and attended New Haven Unified School District schools. He served on the City Council for 13 years from 1997 to 2010, then was elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors representing District 2 since 2012. Richard’s years of public service focused on youth development, community enrichment, and improved social services.

Richard leaves behind a legacy profoundly affecting the lives of thousands through his pioneering work in the recycling industry. He was instrumental in developing a business model for Tri-CED Community Recycling that is based on employing and providing job training for disadvantaged youth. From Richard’s leadership at Tri-CED over the past five decades to his more recent work as the Vice-Chair of the Statewide Commission on Recycling Markets and Curbside Recycling, his impact on sustainability and recycling in California will endure forever. Richard’s contributions to the Union City community, the recycling industry statewide, and the countless jobs he created and nurtured over his illustrious seven decades cannot be overstated.

“Our hearts are heavy upon learning of the death of Richard Valle. Our condolences go out to his wife, Barbara, his son, Andrew, his daughter, Monica, and his grandchildren. Richard’s passing not only represents a great loss for our City, but Alameda County and beyond,” said Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci. “While it saddens me to have lost a neighbor, friend, and fellow colleague, his kindness and dedication touched the lives of countless individuals as Richard always worked to improve the lives of others. He advocated for those whose voices might not have been heard. He has certainly left a lasting imprint on our community and will be missed by all that knew him.”
