Union City Offers Christmas Tree Recycling For Residents

Christmas Trees are only compostable if they are free of all decorations, tinsel, nails, and tree stands.

UNION CITY, CA — Are you one of the 20.89 million people who bought a live Christmas tree this year? If so, you may want to take advantage of Union City's Christmas Tree Recycling program implemented by Tri-CED Community Recycling through Monday, Jan. 30.

To take advantage of the program, single-family homes should place their Christmas trees curbside by 6 a.m. on their collection day.

Prepare your Christmas tree for collection by following these simple guidelines:

  • Remove all decorations, tinsel, lights, and tree stand - trees are only compostable if they are free of all decorations.
  • If your tree exceeds 5 feet in length, please cut your tree in half – place one half in your green Organics (Compost) Cart and place the other half curbside for collection.
  • Do not place your tree in any type of plastic wrap or bag.
  • Natural trees ONLY. Flocked and artificial trees will not be accepted as part of the composting program.

Christmas trees can also be dropped off at the Tri-CED Community Recycling Buy-Back Center located at 33377 Western Avenue at no additional cost.

The free Christmas Tree Drop-Off Program is open to all Union City residents and clean Christmas trees will ONLY be accepted during operating hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., through Jan. 31.
