Watch: Swalwell Congratulates Union City Schools on Congressional Floor
Swalwell recognized New Haven Unified for winning a $29 million Race to the Top federal grant.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) recognized the New Haven Unified School District on the congressional floor in Washington.
In a video posted to YouTube on Feb. 14, the local congressman congratulated the district on being one of 16 school districts nationwide to win the U.S. Department of Education’s Race to the Top grant in December.
New Haven will receive $29 million over the next four years through the grant. Improvements are already being made, with the district announcing the restoration of library services at all of its schools last month.

“This is a tremendous achievement and I am proud of the school’s Superintendent Kari McVeigh and school board members Linda Canlas, Jonas Dino, Michael Ritchie, Sarabjit Cheema and Michelle Matthews who had the good sense and worked hard to apply for this competitive grant,” Swalwell said on the congressional floor.
“I know the 13,000 students from New Haven Unified will benefit from the technology and educational improvements in their schools,” he added.
