World War II Grenade Found Under Union City Home

The grenade was safely removed and no one was harmed.

 

A Union City resident digging under his house for antique bottles Saturday morning made an unexpected find — a World War II-era “pineapple” grenade, according to police.

Union City officers responded and evacuated the home, located in the area of Horner and Vallejo streets.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad were called in to retrieve the grenade.

“They (the bomb squad) also said it appeared to be a real grenade, whether it was live or inert, we don’t know,” said Cmdr. Ben Horner of the Union City Police Department.

The bomb squad took the grenade and, later, destroyed it at a secured site, Horner added.

No one was harmed during the incident.
