Why Go: Be part of Mar Vista's first ever local competition of its kind. There will be three professional judges and an audience to vote for the winner. The auditions will be recorded and contestants will have one minute to perform before the judges.

Why Go: Come join the Pacific Area Community Police Station Open House with a pancake breakfast, guided tours, games, prizes and more for everyone to enjoy. Also, meet the men and women of the LAPD Pacific Devision.

Pricing: Free except for pancake breakfast, which is $5 per person. Funds raised go to the station fund and police youth groups.

Where/When: 13000 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066 (The Learning Garden). Sat. Sept. 10, 2:30 - 4 p.m.

Why Go: Learn from gardenmaster and expert seed saver David King, who'll teach you how to keep generating greens with seeds from your own garden.

Where/When: , 3826 Grand View Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066 (At the MVCC Green Tent). Sun. Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: Meet solar energy pioneers and Mar Vista neighbors James Brennan and John Ayers. They'll present information about the Los Angeles County Solar Challenge – offering up to $40,000 to school booster clubs, religious institutions and other non-profit organizations in LA County who help their communities switch to clean energy from the sun.

Where/When: , 2 Rose Ave, Venice, CA 90291. Sun. Sept. 11, 12-5 p.m.

Why Go: Commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 9/11 with a barbecue to benefit the LAPD and LAFD foundations. Food will be prepared by executive chef Emilio Oliva. Also, there will be music by Freshmaker and DJ Shayn.
