Man, Woman And Cat Killed In Mar Vista House Fire

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two people in a Mar Vista house fire after receiving a 911 hangup call.

MAR VISTA, CA — Two people and a cat were killed in a house fire in Mar Vista early Wednesday morning, and the circumstances around their deaths remain under investigation.

The fire broke out at a 1,096-square-foot home at 3537 South May Street shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters, summoned to the scene by a 911 hangup call, arrived to find the house engulfed in flames, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.

"In searching the premises, LAFD responders discovered two persons, one male and one female (age and affiliation yet to be determined), as well as a pet cat, had perished in the flames," he said. "No other injuries were reported."

The cause of the fire is under active investigation, he added.

Fox 11 reported the fire began near the home's kitchen, and the victims were between 60 and 70 years old.

Arson investigators were called to the scene, but investigators said foul play was not suspected, according to Fox 11.
