Mar Vista Dog Officially The World's Oldest

Meet Gino — he likes walks on the beach, drives up the coast, and he's got the secret to a long and happy life.

LOS ANGELES, CA — In a lot of ways, Gino is a typical 22-year-old. He enjoys walking in the sand along Venice Beach and drives along the coast with the windows down and the music up.

But Gino is one of a kind.

This week he was named the “World’s Oldest Dog," according to the Guinness World Records.

The 22-year-old Chihuahua-Eskimo Dog mix from Mar Vista was born Sept. 24, 2000, making him 22 years and 62 days old as of Friday. While he is currently the oldest living dog on record, he's the seventh oldest dog ever recorded.

According to the Guinness World Records, Gino was adopted by Alex Wolf in Boulder, Colorado in 2002.

"I've taken great care of him over the years and he is still in relatively very good shape and really cute still which is surprising considering his age," said Wolf

Just how old is Gino in dog years?

The lifespan of a Chihuahua is typically 14-16 years, making it one of the breeds with longer than average lifespans, according to the American Kennel Club.

By American Kennel Club calculations, Gino would have turned 80 in human years back when he was 16. Today he'd be a centenarian in human years.

Wolf was a college sophomore when he adopted Gino from the Humane Society while attending the University of Colorado Boulder, according to Today.

“When he was younger, he used to love exploring my parents’ huge backyard with our other dogs in Manhattan Beach, going on walks off the leash in Venice, drives along the coast blasting music with his head out the window, or running around on the golf course in La Quinta,” he told Today.

"We've had a really good run together," Wold told KTLA. "It's been a lot of good times. He's my wingman. He's been everywhere that I go."
