I had the good fortune Wednesday morning to stumble on Howe Homestead Park, at 2950 Walnut Blvd.
This 6.5 acre park was originally the home of James and Mia Howe, who bought the land in 1910. Howe was a legendary world correspondent for the Associated Press, back when Mainstream Media was not a derogatory term.
Named "Gopher Gulch " because of the large number of gopher holes that still remain on the property, it is now home to a park and a series of community gardens. There is a five-year waiting list to get one of the garden sites.
There is also a small collection of old farming implements on display, including, appropriately enough, a walnut huller.
The Kovar Trail runs from the park to the Shell Ridge Open Space, and eventually to the top of Mt. Diablo, for those so inclined.
But even if you are just looking for a brief respite from the madness of the day, Howe Homestead Park is a great place to visit.
