WALNUT CREEK, CA — A special weather statement was issued Friday for Walnut Creek, Concord and San Ramon until 4:45 p.m.

"Quite a surprise to see hail bouncing on the deck in the first week of April," he wrote in an email to Patch.

Indeed, we checked the National Weather Service and a special weather statement expired at 4:45 p.m. Friday for Walnut Creek, Concord and San Ramon. The National Weather Service warned of gusty winds up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail and advised residents to seek shelter in a structure.

"If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building," the weather service said. "Storms capable of producing large quantities of accumulating hail, which can make for slick and hazardous driving conditions. Slow down, and use caution if driving."

Thunder and lightning were also possible as the storm made its way through Contra Costa County.

"At 433 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a line of strong thunderstorms over Danville heading southeast toward Livermore, moving southeast at 10 mph. Line of thunderstorms has a history of
producing lightning and pea-sized hail."
