Last Chance To Take City Of Walnut Creek's SB 9 Housing Survey

The survey asks whether the City should simply comply with the state-required minimum standards or go beyond the minimums.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — The City of Walnut Creek is seeking community input on the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency (HOME) Act, also known as Senate Bill 9, that went into effect Jan. 1, 2022, in California. The state law was intended to alleviate the housing crisis and provide more housing choices in communities.

Under SB 9, cities must expand single-family zoning to allow both duplexes and urban lot splits; for example, two separate homes on a single lot. The law establishes minimum standards for these projects. Cities, though, can adopt local regulations to go beyond the minimum standards in areas such as size, height and parking.

The City is getting ready to adopt its permanent state-required SB 9 ordinance and is seeking community input on options to consider in the final regulations — specifically, whether the City should simply comply with the state-required minimum standards or go beyond the minimums.
