Walnut Creek Motorcycle Crash Shuts Down I-680 In Both Directions [UPDATED]

The CHP reports that lanes are closed in north and southbound directions.

WALNUT CREEK - The California Highway Patrol reported at 3:04 p.m. that the southbound side of I-680 is now fully open for traffic.

WALNUT CREEK - The California Highway Patrol reported at 2:48 p.m. that the northbound side of I-680 is now fully open.

Lanes #1 and #2 remain blocked in the southbound direction of the highway.

UPDATE 2:05PM-

WALNUT CREEK - A motorcyclist was thrown from one side of Interstate Highway 680 to the other during a deadly crash this afternoon in Walnut Creek, California Highway Patrol and fire officials said.

A crash was initially reported along Highway 680 near the North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 p.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District personnel responded shortly afterward and determined that a motorcycle and a vehicle were involved in a collision on the highway's northbound side, Fire Inspector Steve Aubert said.

The motorcyclist was ejected during the collision and landed on the highway's southbound lanes, Aubert said.

Medical personnel provided aid to the motorcyclist, who was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Aubert said.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., CHP officials confirmed that the incident is being classified as a fatality, but were not immediately able to provide further details.

Aubert said a motorist had to be extricated from a vehicle on the highway's southbound lanes.

The vehicle was not involved in the initial crash.

A Sig-alert was issued by the CHP at 1:01 p.m. alerting motorists that lanes are blocked in both directions of the highway.

WALNUT CREEK, CA - Crews are at the scene of a crash involving a motorcyclist that has shut down lanes in both directions of Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek this afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the CHP traffic website, the incident is considered a fatality at this time. The County coroner was contacted at 1:46 p.m., according to the site.

The CHP initially received a report of a crash along Highway 680 near the North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 p.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.

Initial reports described a motorcyclist driving on the northbound lanes of the highway who crashed and was launched into the highway's southbound side.

Fransen was not immediately able to provide details on the crash but said a medical team has responded to the scene.

He said the left lanes are blocked in both directions of the highway.

A Sig-alert was issued at 1:01 p.m. notifying drivers of the closure.
