Walnut Creek Names New Top Cop
A 16-year officer with the Walnut Creek Police Department appoints next police chief from within the department ranks.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A 16-year officer with the Walnut Creek Police Department has been appointed as the next police chief.
On Dec. 31, Capt. Ryan Hibbs will replace the current chief, Jamie Knox, who is retiring.
Knox appointed Hibbs as captain in 2023.

Hibbs is a 21-year veteran of law enforcement who began his career at the Susanville Police Department before making a lateral move to the Napa Police Department. Since joining the Walnut Creek Police Department in 2009, he has held numerous assignments including as a patrol officer, defensive tactics instructor and field training officer. He was assigned to the Community and Downtown Policing Team and has been a member of the Crime Scene Investigations Team.
“I’m always happy when we can promote from within," Walnut Creek City Manager Dan Buckshi said in an statement announcing the appointment.

"Ryan has served the City well for 16 years, and will be a strong leader," Buckshi said, adding his thanks for to Knox for his service.
Mayor Cindy Darling said she looks forward to building on efforts to promote a modern, community-driven police culture and keep Walnut Creek a safe and welcoming city.
Hibbs holds a bachelor's of science degree in Criminal Justice from National University, an administrative of justice degree from Lassen Community College, and is completing a graduate degree at California State University, Dominguez Hill, in negotiations, conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
