Wrong-Way Driver Arrested After Fatal Highway Crash: CHP
The head-on crash killed the other driver at the scene.
WALNUT CREEK, CA — A wrong-way driver was arrested after allegedly crashing head-on into another car at the interchange between Interstate Highway 680 and state Highway 24 in Walnut Creek early Wednesday morning, killing the other driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers initially responded at 12:18 a.m. to a report of a wrong-way driver heading south in the northbound lanes of Highway 680 south of Lake Herman Road in Solano County in a dark-colored Toyota RAV4, CHP officials said.
The Toyota continued into Contra Costa County and then collided head-on with a white Dodge Challenger that was on the transition ramp from eastbound state Highway 24 to northbound Highway 680. The Dodge driver died at the scene, and their name was not immediately available.

The Toyota driver survived the crash and was taken to a hospital. Investigators determined the driver was under the influence and was subsequently arrested. The CHP said the driver, whose name has not been released, will be booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI once medically cleared.
The transition ramp was closed for several hours Wednesday morning but reopened shortly after 8:30 a.m.
