Abused Puppy Left On Roadside; Santa Cruz Deputies Search For Suspect

WATSONVILLE, CA — Santa Cruz County deputies are searching for the person responsible for abusing a puppy and leaving him in a garbage bag on the side of the road. Detailing what authorities called a "horrific animal abuse case," the sheriff's office said a driver found the four-month-old golden retriever under the Buena Vista/Highway 1 overpass on March 26.

The good samaritan contacted California Highway Patrol, and a sergeant rushed the dog to the Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital for care. The pup, nicknamed "Cheddar," is still recovering from significant injuries related to long-term abuse and neglect, investigators said.

The sheriff's office is working with Santa Cruz County Animal Services to solve the case and is asking for the public's help in tracking down information that could identify a suspect. Investigators shared two photos showing Cheddar and the collar he was wearing. Anyone with information that might help can contact investigators at 831-454-7640.
