Drugged Watsonville Driver Causes 5-Car Pile Up

A Santa Cruz man went to the hospital with lacerations on his head from the accident.

CHP officers arrested 49-year-old Karen Holthus of Watsonville on Monday after she caused an accident involving five cars in Live Oak.

At 2:40 p.m., she was driving west on Capitola Road near 7th Avenue when she lost control of her 1999 Ford Windstar and collided with a 30-year-old man from Santa Cruz, a 33-year-old woman from Santa Cruz, a 47-year-old man from Felton and a 22-year-old woman from Santa Cruz.

All five cars involved in the crash were traveling west on Capitola Road, according to CHP Officer Bradley Sadek.

The 30-year-old Santa Cruz man suffered lacerations to his head and had to be transported to Dominican Hospital. 

Holthus was uninjured, but she was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, Sadek said.

The collision is still under investigation.
