How California's New Laws Affect Gun Owners

CALIFORNIA -- California welcomed hundreds of new laws in 2018 with a handful of laws affecting gun owners. Although residents can still own guns in the Golden State, the state government implemented stricter laws for the new year.

Staring this year, all ammunition purchases in California must be made in person through a vendor licensed by the Department of Justice. The law also applies to any transfers of ammunition. Gun owners will also be prohibited from importing ammunition from outside the state without it going through a licensed vendor in California first.

The Sacramento Bee also reported that you can't "drive in ammunition" from out of state but there isn't a limit on how much ammunition you purchase in the state.

Californians can also continue to own assault rifles "but you can't buy them any more and you have to register the ones you have," the newspaper reported.

Another law prohibiting "detachable magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition" is currently being challenged by gun rights groups, the Bee reported.

Firearms Policy Coalition is one of many gun rights groups challenging California's new laws. Lawsuits have been filed against the state over large-capacity magazine, access to firearms and bullet-button assault weapon laws.

The group details its thoughts on California's new gun laws in a blog post on its website, stating that "gun laws are primarily the Legislature's fault, but anti-gun governors have either signed gun control bills or actively lobbied for them. So you can and should blame them for that."
