Hundreds Apply for Sheriff's Deputy Jobs

There are five openings and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has already received more than 300 applications.

In just over a week of recruitment, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has received more than 300 applications for its deputy trainee program.

The sheriff's office has made five spots available for applicants to be paid to go through academy training and come out of the other side as a sheriff's deputy.

According to Deputy April Skalland, this is the first time in three years that the sheriff's office has hired in this way.

Applications can still be submitted to www.santacruzjobs.com until May 10 at 5 p.m.

While competition is already stiff for the five trainee positions, qualifications for the coveted spots are not high. Applicants must have a high school diploma. Skalland said that standout applicants will have shown the ability to hold a steady job and will pass background checks.

"We don't expect a perfect person because that doesn't exist," Skalland said. "But they should have a good driving record and be somebody that really wants to be part of a team where you help the public."

Skalland also said it's great, but certainly not required, for applicants to be local. Local people tend to be more invested in the community from the start of the process, she said.

During the selection process, candidates will be put through written and physical tests.

People already enrolled in the police academy can also apply.
