SEE: Watsonville Man Arrested In Cannabis Lab Explosion

A woman was seriously injured this week in an explosion at a lab producing cannabis concentrates.

WATSONVILLE, CA — A Watsonville man was arrested after a cannabis hash oil lab exploded, leaving one woman seriously hurt, officials said.

Jason Mendez, 22, was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance, arson and other drug-related charges, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

The explosion occurred around 3 p.m. Monday at a home in the 300 block of Blohm Avenue in Aromas, the sheriff's office said. Detectives determined there was a butane hash oil lab there.

Butane can be used to extract cannabis oils and create a substance that resembles honey and is a highly concentrated form of tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive chemical in cannabis.
