WeHo Organic Dog Food Maker Recalls Products Over Euthanasia Drug Contamination

The company is asking customers to return "Cocolicious Chicken & Beef" and "Cocolicious Beef & Turkey" to stores for refunds.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA -- A West Hollywood-based organic pet food company, Party Animal, is recalling two of its poultry- and beef-based dog foods after reports of pentobarbital was found in cans of its products.

Party Animal said it is recalling the products out of "an abundance of caution," after a retailer in Texas notified the company that a customer had cans "Cocolicious Beef & Turkey" and "Cocolicious Chicken & Beef" dog food tested found the presence of pentobarbital, a euthanasia drug.

"The safety of pets is and always will be our first priority," the company said in the recall statement. "We sincerely regret the reports of the discomfort experienced by the pet who consumed this food. As pet parents ourselves, we take this matter seriously."

The products in question were made and distributed in 2015. The company is asking customers to return cans from Lot No. 0136E15204 04, best by July 2019, and Lot No. 0134E15 237 13, best by August 2019 to stores for a refund.

Party Animal said it had tested the remaining products and found no traces of pentobarbital. Low levels of pentobarbital are unlikely to cause adverse effects on animals. The company, however, has not disclosed the amount of the drug found in the Texas sample.
