1. DA Office Awarded Grant for Specialized DUI Prosecution Team (westsacramentonewsledger.com) — Yolo County’s District Attorney has secured a $234,000 state grant to keep a specialized DUI prosecution team focused on serious alcohol- and drug-impaired driving cases through 2026. The team not only prosecutes complex DUIs but also trains officers statewide and brings DUI education, including live trial demonstrations, to local high schools, colleges, and community programs across Yolo County.
   

2. County education dept. earns 2025 Golden Bell Award (davisenterprise.com) — Yolo County’s Office of Education just earned a prestigious 2025 Golden Bell Award for leading the countywide “Roadmap to the Future” effort to improve outcomes for local children and families. The initiative, backed by county, cities, school districts and UC Berkeley, is reshaping how Yolo County coordinates education, health, and economic support from early childhood through adulthood.
   

3. Yolo County now accepting new Cannabis Use Permit applications (dailydemocrat.com) — Yolo County is reopening its Cannabis Use Permit application process on January 5, 2026, for commercial operations in unincorporated areas. If you’re considering cultivation, retail, or other cannabis activities, you’ll need to meet local and state rules and carefully review the county’s Cannabis Land Use Ordinance before applying online. County staff are offering direct support and updated resources on their website.
   

4. One person dead after an incident at the Yolo County Central Landfill (dailydemocrat.com) — A worker was killed Wednesday morning in an industrial accident involving two Northern Recycling dump trucks at the Yolo County Central Landfill compost facility near Davis. Yolo County agencies, including the Sheriff’s and Coroner’s offices, are investigating, while Cal/OSHA assists and support services are being offered to affected employees. County leaders expressed condolences and gratitude to first responders.
   

5. Fireworks company issued $221K in fines by state after deadly Esparto explosion (abc10.com) — State workplace-safety officials have fined a fireworks company $221,000 after the deadly July 1 explosion in Esparto that killed seven people and injured two others. One of the injured was Lt. Sam Machado of the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, whose home was destroyed, as investigators continue a wide-ranging probe into what went wrong.
