1st Winners Of Colorado's $50K Vaccine Scholarships Announced

Here are the vaccinated students from Mesa County, Longmont, Boulder, Littleton and Centennial who each won $50,000.

DENVER, CO — Gov. Jared Polis announced Thursday the first five winners of the state's COVID-19 vaccine scholarship program.

“Congratulations to our very first winners of the Colorado Comeback Cash Scholarship drawing!” Polis said. “As some of the younger Coloradans eligible to receive the incredibly effective vaccine, I thank you for doing your part to protect yourself, your family, your classmates, and other members of your community."

Coloradans between ages 12 and 17 — who have at least one dose of their vaccine — are eligible to each win a $50,000 scholarship. Twenty more winners are scheduled to be announced until July 2.

One of this week's winners, Thomas M. of Steamboat Springs, declined the scholarship because he already earned a full scholarship, and wanted to help another student.

"Thank you for opening the door to another Coloradan," Polis told the student during a news conference.

"This lifesaving vaccine is our ticket for students to return to the classroom, and an opportunity to win a $50,000 scholarship, which can open a multitude of doors for students pursuing advanced education," Polis said.

"I encourage you, whether you’re in high school or in your 60’s, to make a plan today to get this vaccine.”

The funds will be placed in a CollegeInvest account for the student to use when they pursue postsecondary education, including higher and technical education or credential programs. The funds can be left in the interest-bearing account for future educational use.

The scholarship doesn't have to be used for college — it can also be used for training courses and other types of education, Polis said.

Polis announced Friday the first $1 million winner of Colorado's Comeback Cash vaccine drawing.
