Roaring Fork Safe Passages discusses plans with Aspen (aspentimes.com) — Aspen residents may soon see major wildlife overpasses and underpasses along Highway 82 between the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport and Aspen Village, as Roaring Fork Safe Passages courts local backing for multimillion-dollar projects. After an educational flight from Aspen and a detailed presentation, Aspen City Council voiced support and even floated a dedicated countywide tax to fund safer roads for drivers and migrating elk.
   

2. AEF raises record $2.5 million at annual Flamingo gala (aspendailynews.com) — Aspen Education Foundation just set a new record, raising $2.5 million at its Flamingo gala to support Aspen School District programs. From Naturalist Nights to Potbelly Perspectives, programs feature local voices, global environmental issues, and even an Aspen-born pro skier turned would-be circumnavigator sharing his latest adventure.
   

4. Holiday bells ringing for the Salvation Army's biggest giving campaign of the year (postindependent.com) — The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is underway again, funding services that support more than 1,000 people from Aspen to Parachute with basics like food, shelter, and winter gear. Volunteers ring bells outside local stores through Christmas, and every dollar raised stays in the valley to back these programs.

Colorado's winter birds are ‘extraordinary survivors' that grow ‘snowshoes,' build snow caves and stash thousands of seeds (aspentimes.com) — Aspen-area bird lovers are learning how tough local winter birds really are, from ptarmigans that grow feather “snowshoes” to chickadees that stash tens of thousands of seeds. The Roaring Fork Audubon chapter, which serves the region from Aspen to Vail to Rifle, shares tips on appreciating and protecting these resilient species as climate and habitat pressures grow.
