A new local business is opening its doors with a mission to serve the community and give back from day one. UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage of Colorado Springs will celebrate its grand opening on Tuesday, July 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its new facility, located at 1805 South Academy Boulevard.

To mark the occasion, Judy and Derrick Timm, a mother-and-son team, are partnering with Goodwill of Colorado Springs for a “Stuff the Storage Unit” Donation Drive. Neighbors are invited to bring gently used items to donate, tour the new facility, enjoy light refreshments, and sign a commemorative banner on the donation container.

For Judy Timm, the opening of UNITS is more than just a new business venture - it’s a full-circle moment. A 69-year-old MBA and former CPA, Judy is launching her first business after decades in finance and raising a family in Colorado Springs, where she has lived since 1983. She first encountered UNITS as a customer and was so impressed by the service that she decided to bring the portable storage concept to her hometown.

“After using UNITS myself, I saw firsthand the need for flexible, reliable storage,” said Judy. “This felt like the right opportunity to invest in something meaningful—and in the community that’s been home for over 40 years.”

The newly constructed facility spans nearly 12,000 square feet of climate-controlled space, housing 99 containers with space and equipment to stack units three high. But it’s not just the physical space that makes this business stand out - it’s the people behind it.

Michelle Madrid, a 12-year veteran of the Colorado Springs Fire Department, will serve as the location’s delivery specialist. Madrid, one of just 13 female firefighters in a department of 500, is also a certified EMT and single mom of two boys. She’ll continue her service to the city while taking on this new role at UNITS.

“We’re building this business with the same values my parents instilled in me—integrity, service, and community,” said Derrick Timm. “We’re proud to launch this venture as a family and to partner with organizations like Goodwill that uplift others.”
