Springs Ranch Memory Care Celebrates Residents' Artistic Legacies
Canvas of Memories Art Show Honors Residents' Accomplishments and the Role of the Arts for those Living with Memory Loss
At Springs Ranch Memory Care's “Canvas of Memories Art Show” on Thursday, December 11, 2025, families, residents, and team members will celebrate the creativity, talents, and personal experiences of individuals living with dementia. The event will feature original works by two accomplished retired artists.
Joyce Ritchey was a professional artist who began painting in the early 1960’s. Her preferred medium was watercolor, but she also enjoyed working in acrylics, oil, pencil, and pastels. Inspired by nature, Joyce often depicted Southwestern pottery and Texas landscapes. She is proud to have sold her work at art galleries, art shows, and auctions nationwide. Joyce’s art has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Victoria Regional Airport in Victoria, Texas.
An accomplished painter, Susan Tormoen worked primarily in watercolor and oil. Years ago, several of her pieces were accepted into the Permanent Collection of “Very Special Arts of Wisconsin.” More recently, she was drawn to the vibrant colors and expressive possibilities of pastels, and today, Susan enjoys recreating her earlier works using these soft chalks.

Joyce's and Susan’s artwork will be displayed and Springs Ranch resident and experienced pianist, Loretta Chappell, will perform during the reception.
This event is a celebration of artistic accomplishments, and also an opportunity to highlight the therapeutic role of the arts for individuals living with dementia. Music can unlock emotional memory, boost mood, reduce agitation, and strengthen connection, even when verbal communication becomes difficult. Visual art can evoke long-held memories, spark conversation, and encourage self-expression. Springs Ranch offers monthly art classes that provide residents with an outlet for creativity and connection.
