The Douglas County Sheriff's office said Bixby and a second driver of a silver Jeep, now identified as Jose, were both driving stolen cars and sped away as sheriff's deputies tried to perform a traffic stop. Sheriff's deputies chased the Jeep, with Jose allegedly at the wheel, "drove recklessly in both lanes of traffic at speeds over 100 mph." on US 85, a statement from the sheriff's office said.
While the Mitsubishi crashed into the car at the Littleton intersection, the Jeep escaped, and was later found abandoned, the sheriff's office said.
Bixby was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.
“I do not believe the chase caused the accident at all because we weren’t chasing that Mitsubishi,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock told Fox31 news. “We couldn’t even get close."
The sheriff's office was conducting an internal investigation into the agency's pursuit policy, the station reported.
