Black History And More In February At Bemis Public Library

LITTLETON, CO – February is the shortest month, but Littleton's Bemis Public Library has a full schedule of events planned. The library will host special programs for Black History Month, as well as special events such as a technology fair, crafts and a visit by Colorado authors. Get out of the house or the cold and head over to the library for afternoon classes this month.

The library is located at 6014 S. Datura St., Littleton, CO 80120

Here are some of the programs scheduled for February:

Tech It Out: Technology Fair- Saturday, Feb. 2, Noon-4 p.m.
Demo Spheros, Ozobots, Bloxels, Virtual Reality, and more at Bemis Library’s Tech It Out technology fair! The library will showcase its coolest technologies from 12 pm to 4 pm on the lower level in the Art Gallery. Try your hand at creating a pixel video game, immerse yourself in a virtual world, drive robots around the library, and visit booths from local businesses such as Young Engineers.

Santeria and the Hispanic Caribbean-Monday, Feb. 4, 2 p.m.
Learn how the Santeria or Yoruba theology became part of the Hispanic Caribbean culture through Africans brought to these islands as slaves. The slaves continued practicing their beliefs masking their demigods with the many Saints introduced by the Catholic missionaries. The practice continues today through the Hispanic Caribbean islands and in other countries. Presenter Dr. Iriate holds a PhD in Special Education and Counseling and was born in Cuba and immigrated to the U.S. as a young child.

Senior Book Club-Monday, Feb. 4, 2 p.m. February’s book is Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly

Musical Performance: Jam Key Jam-Saturday, Feb. 9th, 2 p.m.
Jam Key Jam musicians Nabin and Bijay are Nepal’s leading musicians for the last two decades and have been building a buzz in the Colorado scene as JAM KEY JAM with their unique approach to the centuries- old classical Ragas and Nepali traditional & folk music.

Enhancing Micro-Circulation-Monday, Feb. 11, 2 p.m.
Learn about the current science regarding micro-circulation and the various modalities that improve micro-circulation, including food and exercise. Presenter Zita Easton is a Certified Nutrition Therapy Practitioner and Dementia Specialist.

Turning Point: documentary film-Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2-4 p.m.
Join us for a viewing of the documentary film Turning Point. Acclaimed filmmaker James Keach takes us inside the quest for the first medication that that could treat the underlying process of Alzheimer’s disease. Along the way, we meet the people behind these grand experiments, the scientists driven as much by personal conviction as professional innovation. Love Your Local Author Showcase- Saturday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m
Show some love for local authors! Bemis Public Library’s Love Your Local Author Showcase highlights local Littleton and Colorado authors. Local authors will be on hand to discuss their work, sign and sell books.

Get Your Crafting On – Crafts for Grownups at the Library-Sunday, February 17, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Heartfelt Crafts. We can all use a little coziness this time of year – so let’s make something snuggly! Felt, flannel, and all things fuzzy come together in ornaments, tiny pocket creatures, and even pieces of wearable art. Whether you’re making something to keep or give away, there’s a lot to love about such heart-felt crafts! Black History Live-Maya Angelou-Thursday, Feb. 21, 2 p.m.
Civil rights organizer and poet Maya Angelou had two passions: to write and to right wrongs. Her first autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings brought her international recognition and acclaim. Join renowned storyteller Becky Stone as she portrays Angelou. This living history portrayal will give insight into how Angelou wrote, and why, and reflect on her philosophy of life, which included a strong belief in the power of words.

Pope Francis with Active Minds -Friday, February 22, 2 p.m.
Pope Francis has a favorability rating that is among the highest in modern papal history. Join Active Minds as we seek to understand why Catholics and much of the non-Catholic world find Pope Francis so appealing. We will cover his background as the first Pope from the Americas, his impact so far since becoming Pope in 2013, and what the future may hold for the Catholic Church under his leadership.

Movie Matinee:The Old Man & The Gun (PG-13) -Saturday, February 23, 2-4 p.m.
Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker, a career criminal and prison escape artist, and his escape from San Quentin at the age of 70. Starring Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek. Enjoy free popcorn and lemonade.

Racism in America with OLLI-Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2 p.m.
Why do we have so much trouble talking about race? How is racism manifested in our country? Join an instructor from OLLI as we explore the history of racism and learn about the varying perceptions of racism in our country.

Books & Beer-Thursday, Feb. 28, 6:00 p.m. at Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company

All technology classes and open computer lab are offered from 9:30-11 a.m. unless otherwise noted. One-on-One Technology Help is available on Wednesdays by appointment only.
One-on-One Tech Help, February 4 (9:30-11 a.m. – 30 minute time slots) Sign up for a 30 minute individualized tech appointment with a librarian to get assistance with anything from Smartphones and Tablets to signing up for an email address. Note: Registration is required for one-on-one appointments.

• Google Drive Basics, February 11 (9:30-11 a.m.) Learn how to use several of the powerful tools located within your gmail account. We will go over creating a document using Google Docs, saving and sharing documents in Google Drive, as well as an overview of the other Google Drive apps. Note: registration required and class size limited to 10 people. Prerequisites: Computer basics (familiarity with keyboard and mouse) and a gmail account (please contact library if you need assistance creating an account)

• Writing a Resume with Word, Wednesday February 20 (6-7:30 p.m.) Learn how to use Microsoft Word’s formatting tools to create a resume. We will go over special formatting, such as horizontal line breaks, inserting symbols, and changing the margins. We will also learn how to save documents as a PDF. Note: registration required and class size limited to 10 people. Prerequisites: Computer basics (familiarity with keyboard and mouse) and Microsoft Word basics (has used the program before).
• Computer and Device Training: Open Computer Lab Get answers to all of your computer-related questions every Thursday morning from 9:30-11 a.m. in the library’s Computer Lab. Practice your computer skills and have a little one-on-one time with a computer class instructor. Bring your smartphone or tablet and receive individual help downloading ebooks and e-audiobooks to your device. No registration required.
