Englewood City Manager Quits During Contentious Meeting

Frustration over flooding and a recall effort for a sitting council member has caused discord in the city, Eric Keck said.

ENGLEWOOD, CO – At a contentious city council meeting, Englewood City Manager Eric Keck announced he would resign, calling the city's direction divisive.

“My prayer for the City of Englewood as I exit this organization, and potentially exit the community, is that there is healing,” Eric Keck said during the Sept. 4 council meeting, as reported in the Englewood Herald.

The Herald reported that due to threats of possible violence, the public had to pass through metal detectors to attend. One council member, Cheryl Wink, said in a statement read by Mayor Linda Olson that she feared for her safety.

Emotions were high in the midst of a "turbulent time for Englewood's government," reporter Ellis Arnold wrote. The flooding July 24 that killed a woman in an Englewood basement, and ongoing drama over a recall election for Councilmember Laurett Barrentine have caused the city's management to become dysfunctional, Keck hinted.

The situation has “clearly have had an adverse impact on a number of people, their health (and) their relationships with their neighbors, and I just really hope that that will clear up,” he said in a prepared statement.
