Littleton Welcomes New Dog Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem

A Bassett hound and French bulldog won the most votes in a citywide Dog Mayor contest, the Littleton Independent reports.

LITTLETON, CO — Welcome to the Murdoch Administration, Littleton.

Littleton’s new mayor is Murdoch, a 5-year-old basset hound voted on Tuesday to be the city’s first honorary “dog mayor.”

Over 6,000 people voted for 10 dogs vying to be the city’s first canine leader as part of a November contest run by Historic Littleton.

Murdoch beat out other nine candidates, receiving 2,495 votes, according to the Littleton Independent. His “Mayor Pro Tem” will be Netty, a 6-year-old French bulldog who won 2,194 votes. The two dogs will be sworn in a “barking-in ceremony” tentatively scheduled for Jan. 18, after which they’ll become the city’s new mascots, and be featured in future city events and Historic Littleton tours, according to the Independent.

“We’re very, very excited about it,” Beverly Pillow, Murdoch’s owner, told The Independent. “He will be a great mascot for the city.”
