Sock It to the Homeless With Littleton Footwear Drive

Donate clean socks for people experiencing homelessness in Littleton throughout December.

LITTLETON, CO – A warm pair of socks, or two, or three, are among items most requested by people experiencing homelessness. A new sock-drive, the Denver South Sock it Out Challenge, is pitting residents of several towns against each other to see who can generate the most donated (new) socks.

Littleton will go "toe to toe" with Greenwood Village, Centennial and Lone Tree, the city said in a press statement.

Through the month of December, you can donate clean pairs of new socks for men, women and children in bins around Littleton. Access to clean socks helps alleviate foot and health problems, among local men, women and children who are experiencing homelessness. Plus, having clean socks helps everyone feel great.

The campaign was started in 2012 by Phillis Shimamoto, of Littleton, and Sue Lee, of Lone Tree who collected 500 pairs of socks the first year. They're now up to 425,000 pairs of socks this year.

A pair of socks on a person who is really on the street lasts about a week,” Lee told Colorado Community Media. “The reality is not only are we providing them socks to keep them warm, but we’re helping to keep them out of the hospital. And we’re causing an awareness. Citizens have become aware of the situation in a way they never would.”
