Western Welcome Week began in 1928 when the editor of the Littleton Independent, Houstoun Waring, held a 40th anniversary celebration for the newspaper. The event was so successful that the following year, Waring decided to hold a celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Richard S. Little, the founder of the Littleton community. Each year from then on, the tradition continued.
